The "Adaptive headlight" optional accessory also includes a servo motor, which makes the standard reflection mirror into a rotating mirror. The mirror is then rotated around an axis depending on the lean position and compensates for the roll angle of the vehicle. This enables the low-beam headlight to also compensate for the lean position as well as the pitch compensation. Both movements are superimposed, so that the beam shines into the corner. This results in vastly improved road visibility when taking corners.
The vehicle's lean position is determined via a centrally located angular rate sensor. The information is distributed via the CAN bus and also used for the traction control DTC. The complex algorithms used here were developed solely by BMW Motorrad and are the only one of their kind as yet.
