15,000 miles. Two continents. Or, just another GS ride.
Ewan and Charley do it again in "Long Way Down."
In 2006, Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman circumnavigated Planet Earth in the ground-breaking moto-reality series "Long Way Around." And now, this summer, their insatiable appetite for wanderlust is featured once again with their follow-up odyssey, "Long Way Down." This time, these two best friends, GS riders, and intrepid travelers tackle Europe and the continent of Africa, heading south from the northernmost tip of Scotland, through Western Europe, then down the entire length of the African continent before finishing in Cape Aguthas, South Africa.
There’s only one motorcycle that could withstand the rigors of an 85–day, 15,000–mile journey through some of the world’s roughest, most demanding, and unpredictable terrain: the aptly named R 1200 GS Adventure. And in "Long Way Down," this 105–horsepower monster enduro is shown in all its glory, crossing rivers, strafing dunes, tearing through deep sand, clinging mud, and brutalizing rocks, navigating every imaginable kind of treacherous terrain, and generally displaying the dominant characteristics that make the GS Adventure the only choice for serious, globe-trotting explorers. Both Ewan and Charley’s bikes are tricked out with touring accoutrements, as well as custom leopard-skin and zebra-print paint schemes, too.
Aboard their R 1200 GS Adventures, Ewan and Charley travel through numerous countries including Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Namibia, experiencing countless native cultures and breathtaking natural wonders. They also face numerous challenges and perils, from border crossings in political hot spots to up-close and personal interactions with exotic wildlife. (Some might say too personal.) Along the way, they also get to know a cross section of local peoples and cultures that is rarely seen, as well as ex perience unique African charm and hospitality. (Ewan and Charley also raised over $1 million dollars for UNICEF while conducting this ride, so their trip of a lifetime is also for a good cause.)
If you’re a GS rider and have ever dreamed of taking such a trip, or if you’re a GS rider who’s actually done such a trip—and there are plenty of you out there who have—this is your chance to see the bike you love and the type of riding you love showcased like never before. This is reality programming that does not involve people dancing, dating, or being voted off some cheesy island. This is BMW GS-style reality, with all the grit, challenge, and ruggedness you’d expect, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself plotting your own course of adventure to parts unknown immediately after watching the first episode, which premieres on the Fox Reality TV Network this August 2nd at 9 pm EST. You can also mark your calendars for July 22nd, when "Long Way Down" opens in select movie theaters around the country. For more information, visit www.longwaydown.com.
