Unstoppable since 1923.
The history of BMW Motorrad is an impressive success story which started almost 90 years ago with the development of the first ever BMW opposed-twin 'boxer' engine: it was on January 2nd 1917 that Max Friz began work for BMW. Since the Treaty of Versailles banned construction of aircraft and aircraft engines, he dedicated all his efforts to motorcycles. And he laid the foundations for an impressive history: he built the first ever BMW motorcycle, the R 32.
In the decades that followed, BMW Motorrad and its pioneering innovations became famous not just in off-road racing and on race tracks but throughout the whole world of motorcycling: from its innovative telescopic fork and the new “Earles fork” BMWs through to the first electronic-hydraulic ABS system for motorcycles, BMW Motorrad has demonstrated over a period of nine decades what perfect riding pleasure on two wheels is all about.
Whether the first ever BMW motorcycle to come off the production line in 1923, the countless victories in racing and rallies or the millions of kilometres covered by BMW riders all over the world today - BMW Motorrad is simply unstoppable. And its passion is a source of sheer fascination.
In 2013 BMW Motorrad celebrates a major anniversary:
