With the “30 Years GS” special models, BMW celebrates the anniversary of the most successful model series ever. In its mature modern state, a “GS” is more up-to-date now than ever before. 30 years ago in 1980, a new type of motorcycling came into being which merged a number of different trends to create a completely new and unique concept: a supreme style of travel, both on the road and on rough ground, suitable for both sports and touring, with a powerful engine and a robust structure. The GS class was born with the original forebear of the series, the R 80 G/S - the G standing for the German word “Gelände” (terrain) and the S for “Sport” and later for “Strasse” (road).
From the very beginning white/blue/red was the colour code for a GS – derived from the company’s motor racing colours. In addition to the combination of Alpine White and the three-colour decor, the Adventure model also offers another special feature: it is the only one to be fitted with a two-colour red and black seat - which sets it clearly apart from the other three 30 Years special models in visual terms.
The R 1200 GS Adventure is the legitimate successor to the R 80 G/S Paris-Dakar, which advanced the GS idea as long ago as 1984, increasing its long-distance capabilities significantly due to the enlarged fuel tank.
Today the “Adventure” represents the crowning glory of the GS idea for all those motorcyclists who simple can’t travel far enough. The special model highlights this idea with its extended range of standard equipment: the larger upper shell for hand protectors and the robust underbody protection in aluminium clearly state where the Adventure is heading: everywhere!
The same applies to the R 1200 GS Adventure “30 Years GS”: it’s a collector’s item. But not until it gets old. And whether or not that will ever happen is probably difficult to say even after an extended test drive on this indestructible machine ... But do your dealer one favour: don’t make him wait too long - either for your test drive or for your return from it.
